Welcome

Welcome to Maynooth Taekwon-Do School. Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art that combines self-defence and combat, sport, exercise, as well as a code of conduct and philosophy. We welcome people of all ages to our club and invite you to come along to try out Taekwon-Do for yourself.

It is a great opportunity to meet people, make new friends, improve both physical and mental health and learn practical self-defence skills. Details of our class times and location can be found on this website. We look forward to training with you.

History of the School

Maynooth Taekwon-Do School was established under the instruction of Mr. Gareth Curran (VI). The club is affiliated to both the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and the All European Taekwon-Do Federation (AETF). We are also members of the Irish Taekwon-Do Union (ITU), the Irish Sports Council (ISC) and the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), allowing our members to partake in the selection process for the Irish national team and the opportunity to compete at Olympic level.

Since opening, Maynooth Taekwon-Do School has gone from strength to strength and continues to do so thanks to the dedication of our members and the strong reputation we are building in the local community. Our students not only thrive at a local and national level but have also competed very successfully on the international stage and we look forward to this continued success in the future.

Our Aim

Our aim is to teach ITF style Taekwon-Do to students of all ages. We teach this Korean form of martial art both as a form of self-defence and as a sport. It is an empty hand martial art, meaning we do not use weapons, because a student who is well versed in Taekwon-Do will have no need for them. However, we do teach how to defend against the more modern weapons that are found and used in society today, and stay clear of swords and nunchuks, which had their place in the ancient orient.

Our instructors are committed to continuing their own personal development in terms of ITF Taekwon-Do and are dedicated to teaching this martial art to the highest of international standards. Our students are graded according to guidelines laid out by the International Taekwon-Do Federation, ensuring their grade and ability is recognised worldwide. We provide opportunities for our members to compete at a local, national and international level, while promoting good sportsmanship and respect for all participants. The tenets of Taekwon-Do are promoted at all times.

We aim to provide a safe and fun environment for all our members with Garda vetted instructors and qualified Children’s Officers available for our junior members. If you would like to practice Taekwon-Do we hope you will join us at Maynooth Taekwon-Do School, and we look forward to training with you in the future.

Yours in Taekwon-Do,
Gareth Curran (VI),
Chief Instructor
